Hot holiday tips for renters

The holidays are almost here! Whether you’re spending time at the beach or heading out of town, here are a few simple precautions that can keep your home secure.

Make sure your property manager knows when you’re away, just in case something crops up. Update them with your contact details, and maybe have a quick word with the neighbours too. A friendly pair of eyes on your place never hurts!

Don’t make it easy for burglars.

Sadly, Christmas and New Year are busy times for burglars. But a few easy steps can keep your home off their radar:

  • Skip the social media brag. Hold off on posting your holiday snaps until you’re back, no need to broadcast that your house is empty.
  • Hide those pressie boxes. Don’t leave big boxes from new gadgets or appliances out by the kerb. Break them down so you’re not advertising what might be inside your house.
  • Gift hiding 101. Keep presents and valuables away from the windows and out of sight, to avoid tempting passersby!"
  • Lock up tight. Double-check all doors and windows before you go.
  • Lights, camera, security! Motion-sensor lights or timers can give the impression someone’s home. A cheap deterrent that works wonders.

No alarm system? Even a dummy camera can do the trick.

They’re inexpensive, easy to spot, and enough to make burglars think twice. And if you’re thinking of going the extra mile and getting an actual alarm or security cameras installed, they might even help lower your insurance premiums.

What’s your property manager’s holiday plan?

Check in with your property manager to find out their hours over the break. Barfoot & Thompson always have someone on call, so you’ll never be left in the lurch if something goes wrong. Good to know, right?

Decorating? Keep it damage-free.

We all love a bit of festive flair - tinsel, fairy lights, the works. But remember, nails and hooks can leave a mark that you’ll end up paying for later. Opt for removable plastic hooks, and if you’ve got a real tree, pop a mat under it to avoid water stains on the wood or carpet. Oh, and switch those fairy lights off when you’re not home - nobody wants a fire hazard or a surprise spike in the power bill.

Enjoy your summer, stay safe, and if you need any help or advice while you're away, remember that your Barfoot & Thompson property manager is just a phone call away.
